Rock n' Roll is a type of music that became popular in the late 1940's, early 1950s and 1960's. The musical genre had its start from blues, gospel and jazz music that became popular among African American audiences. Although, it was influenced by the blues, it featured electrically amplified guitars, harmonicas and drums.

At the same time, black gospel music became popular and were labeled as "Rhythm and Blues" which as we know today is the popular R & B genre. Rock n' Roll and R & B continued to grow in popularity because they were featured in small clubs, radio stations and on the television program, American Bandstand. Most parents of the young teenagers in the 1950's and 1960's didn't approve of Rock n' Roll or R & B because it had suggestive dancing, provacative lyrics and was loud and upbeat. Despite parents rejecting the genre, it continued to grow.
